After 17+ years in the business and more than $112M in managed Google Ads spend, we’ve seen just about every billing question, concern and bit of confusion you can imagine. One of the most common is why Google’s card charges don’t always line up neatly with a business owner’s monthly budget. Thankfully, there’s usually a very good reason for this, and it all comes back to how the Google Ads billing cycle works.
So How Does the Google Ads Billing Cycle Work?
- Google simply bill each time you accrue enough clicks to reach your normal billing threshold (for example $1K) and/or at the beginning of each month for any balance owing (the unbilled balance from the previous month).
- For new advertisers, Google’s systems will start with lower thresholds to begin with (for example $20, $50, $100, $500 etc) as the system builds up confidence
- Google click budgets are always GST ex, and Google is required to add on GST at the time of billing. Most businesses will be able to claim this back as a part of their normal BAS (please ask your accountant if in doubt)
- Please also keep in mind that it can often take your bank ~1-10 business days to clear a transaction, so please don’t panic when comparing dates between pending and cleared transactions (they are not the same)
- Google’s ‘budget pacing’ aims towards your full monthly budget (30.4 X daily budget) irrespective of how many days a week we have campaigns active, so there may be some days where you underspend (due to lower market demand), and other days where you overspend (higher market demand), and Google’s systems will ensure everything balances out over the course of a full month
- As always, we don’t make a single cent from Google Clicks, and always operate fully transparently and with your best interests in mind when it comes to results via Google Ads. Rest assured, that’s never going to change

The Bottom Line
Ultimately, as a top 3% Google certified agency, we strive to offer the best Google Ads management in the country and our focus is always on squeezing as much value and as many clicks and enquiries/sales as we possibly can from your investment in Google Ads Advertising. And depending on your budget, this does not always mean ranking #1 on Google on every single keyword every second of every day.
